Lucasi Hybrid 2010 CCS Canadian National 8 Ball Championship Results

Report by Ted Harms – Canadian Cue Sport Productions

The Return of the Rock

The 15th Annual Lucasi Hybrid 2010 CCS Canadian 8 Ball Championships were held March 16 – 20th at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel in Toronto, Ontario.

The CCS welcomes Lucasi Hybrid as our official National Cue Sponsor. Not only do they sponsor all of our Championships in Canada, they also sponsor every league that sanctions with the CCS.

Due to a booking conflict at the Hotel, this was the first time in several years the Tourney wasn’t at Easter.

Despite conflict with a couple of other Tourneys, the CCS Board was extremely pleased that we held the Team count and the Singles saw slightly more Entries. Along with the new 9Ball Singles event, the action was as strong and exciting as ever.

Next year for 2011, we will be back at Easter with dates of April 19th – 23rd.

Once again, special thanks to Jim Wych, world renowned Billiards Commentator, who staged a series of Pool Shows in the Foyer throughout the tournament. We wish every success to Jim who has since moved to Las Vegas to pursue a billiards related business opportunity.

After a 2 year absence, 2011 will see the return of the highly entertaining and hugely popular ‘Dr. Cue’ Tom Rossman. His energy and shows are truly amazing.

Here are the tourney hi-lights and the new Champions:

TEAMS
Mens Team
It’s simple. If you are going to be the Champ in the A Advanced Division, you first have to get by
a team from Toronto, captained from day one by Vince McIntyre, called The Rock.

Winners in 2003 and 2004, Runners up in 2006, in 2010 they became the first 3 time National Champs. Vince’s team mates this time around were Al Logan, Bill Lockerby III, Chris Woods, Ray Cruz, Chris Pegg and Harry Shagarass.

Who did they beat in the Finals? Their arch rival, two time National Champs Team Spain OLA! from Calgary AB (Captain – Mike Burton, Jeremy Smith, Pete Sky, Mike Aboudaher, Mark Vonogradov). A great Final as always, The Rock came to play and were not to be denied.

The B Open Division was won by Donkey Punch from Oakville ON (Captain – Manny Estevez, Jason Netherton, Gannon McSween, Terry Horton, Jason Gunn, Bill Hong) over the Over Rated team from St. Catherines ON (Captain – Ben Cousfield, Kevin Dick, Scott Seto, Shane MacdOnald, Jason Tempest, Mike Connell, Rob Moore, Mark Secord).

The C Standard Division was won by One More Game from Newmarket ON (Captain – Don Thibodeau, Matt Thibodeau, Tom Hogan, Justin McGenerty, Keith Dusome, Chris Harvison) over Team Predator from Peterborough ON (Captain – Mike Gallagher, Jeff Pollock, Mike Black, Matt Wagar, Shaun Pollock, Dan Nicholls).

Womens Team
In the A Advanced Division, it’s really good to see just strong the competition is and how well the women play. Give them an open table and the game is done.

In the end for 2010, it was Break N Run from North York ON (Captain – Marcie Dunbar, Renee Colley, Maureen Van de Ven, Kayla Jones) who claimed the title over a very strong team from the West called Westside (makes sense) from Calgary AB (Captain – Mary Rayner, Laureen Martin, Maryann McConnell, Andrea Wilson).

The B Open Division was won by Step Aside from Toronto ON (Captain – Bev Avery, Roxanne Walsh, Linda McKenzie, Sheila Ng) over the Chicks N Hens from St. Catherines ON (Captain – Penny Devos, Betty MacDonald, Tracy Girard, Jennifer Deighton, Melvina Young, Angie Newbold).

SINGLES 9 BALL
A new Event for 2010, all play was in a single group with handicaps.

Mens
What a show put on by the Newfies and the Maritimers who claimed 7 out of the top 8 spots that got paid. Only Tol Kuy from Newmarket ON prevented a clean sweep. If you need to be a good drinker to play good 9Ball, that explains everything.

All from St. John’s NF, it was Jim Nolander who won out over Terry Gulliver in the Finals with Rick Crocker finishing third.

Womens
The Finals saw Naomi Williams of Toronto ON (2008 National 8Ball Singles Champ) win out over Maryann McConnell of Port Alberni BC (2010 Western 8Ball Singles Champ).

SINGLES 8 BALL
Mens
All the big boys were there for the A Advanced Division and it turns out we have some new big boys. In the Finals, it was Hermie Dy of Barrie ON over Cory Booth from Peterborough ON.

The B Open Division was won by Michael Gallacher of Peterborough ON over Dave Kelly of Charlottetown PEI.

The C Standard Division was won by Jim Nolander of St. John’s NF over Tony Siddall of Cambridge ON.

Womens
In the A Advanced Division, the Finals saw another great matchup - the 2009 Western Champion Maryann McConnell from Port Alberni BC versus the 2008 National Champion Denise Belanger of Toronto ON who kept her incredible string of top 4 finishes alive at 15 years in a row!

Congrats to Maryann who, at her age, is a truly remarkable player and an inspiration to everyone.

The B Open Division was won by Loreen Toutant of Barrie ON over Lisa Noseworthy of Brantford ON.

Junior Singles
In the 18 & Under Division, It was a repeat of 2009 with Daniel Devos Jr. of St.Catherines ON winning in the finals over Peng Chen of Hamilton ON.

SCOTCH DOUBLES
Improving on their 3rd place finish in 2009, it was the team of Vince McIntyre and Renee Colley from Pefferlaw ON who won out over Scott Yanke and Stacie Gronau from Waterloo ON in the Finals of the A Advanced Division.

In the B Open Division, it was the team of Hermie DY and Loreen Toutant from Barrie who won out in the Finals over Peter O’Dowd and Lisa Noseworthy from Brantford ON.

The Canadian Cue Sport Association wishes to thank the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel for hosting us once again, Hi Country Promotions of Las Vegas for the Valley Tables and the usual stellar Tournament Direction by Gary Benson himself, the ACS certified Referee Crew headed by Wayne Dwyer from Scarborough ON and all the Sponsors – Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Jeff White, Don Broos Cue Services, F.G. Bradley, Table Sports Canada and BDR Transfers.
