Lucasi Hybrid 2010 CCS Western 8 Ball Championship Results

Report by Ted Harms – Canadian Cue Sport Productions

The VI Stickmen Roll On

The 8h Annual Lucasi Hybrid CCS Western Canadian 8 Ball Championships were held April 23rd – May 2nd at the Acadia Recreation Centre in Calgary AB.

The CCS welcomes Lucasi Hybrid as our official National Cue Sponsor. Not only do they sponsor all of our Championships in Canada, they also sponsor every league that sanctions with the CCS. Thank you Lucasi!

After a bit of a dip in Entries last year, this Tourney more than rebounded this year with a 10% plus increase to 164 in Singles events and 67 in Team events. With Divisions offered from Standard to Open to Advanced, a good mix of players came from as far as Regina SK, Whitehorse YK and Vancouver Island BC.

If the players are going to have fun while playing their hearts out, the Tourney needs to be super organized and run super smooth. For that, we thank Chris Kelly, the Tournament Director and Jeff Phythian, head of the ACS certified Referee Crew who once again did a superb job.

We congratulate all the winners in all the Divisions and wish special good luck to the Advanced Champions who, with CCS paid trips, will represent the West at the CCS 2011 Canadians in Toronto next April.

Here are the highlights:

Mens Team
In the A Advanced, for the first time in 6 years, the Champ was not from Calgary.

Congrats to the VI Stickmen, a group of players from Vancouver Island BC who’ve worked hard, put their time in and are now showing that they are a team to be reckoned with.

Proving that their win in February in the CCS BC Championships was no fluke, in the Finals they faced Team Spain OLA! from Calgary AB (3 time Westerns Champ and 2 time Canadians Champ) and came out on top. Hard earned and well done.

The B Open was won by That’s Close of Kamloops BC over High Octane from Edmonton AB and the C Standard was won by Soggy Moccasins from Cluny AB over the Hot Stix from Cold Lake AB.

Womens Team
In the A Advanced, the Westside team from Calgary/Vancouver Island won out over the very strong team called Cue Biz from Fort McMurray AB.

The Westside team were just back from the Canadians in Toronto in March where they made the Finals finishing a fantastic second. Having paid their own way in 2010, for 2011 they will have a paid CCS trip to see if they can put another scare into the Eastern teams.

The B Open was won by Chalk Teasers from Cold Lake AB over the Cuegars from Cold Lake AB.

Mens Singles 9Ball
A new Event for 2010, all play was in a single group with handicaps.

When play was all over, it was a very determined James Blackman of Cold Lake AB who refused to lose and won out over Leslie Thomas of Prince George BC (last years Mens B Open 8Ball Singles Champ).

For a bit of irony, see who won the Mens B Open 8Ball Singles this year.

Mens Singles 8Ball
In the A Advanced, other than the legendary Larry Wilson of Victoria BC, no player has ever
repeated as Westerns Champ.

Always a tough field, where it seems that even the slightest mistake gets punished, this year it was Brad Whyte of Calgary AB who won over last year’s Champ Russ Whittle, from Calgary AB. How did Larry do? Third.

The B Open was won by James Blackman of Cold Lake AB over Stewart Adams from Nanaimo BC.and the C Standard was won by Eugene Cardinal of Cold Lake AB over Tyler Richter of Fort McMurray AB.

Womens Singles 8Ball
In the A Advanced, the Westerns are proving to be a favourite Tourney for Andrea Wilson of Victoria BC. Yes, Larry is her husband – see Scotch Doubles.

In the Finals, Andrea claimed her 4th Westerns title by winning out over Vegas Master Mona Remedios from Edmonton AB.

The B Open was won by Shawna Douglas of Calgary AB over Mary Rayner also from Calgary AB.

Junior Singles
The 18&Under Division was won for the 3rd year in a row by Daniel (Skinny) Hathaway of Edmonton over Justin Beavis from Calgary AB. Justin had just moved up after having won the 14&Under the last 3 years.

Scotch Doubles
In the A Advanced, the team of Larry and Andrea Wilson from Victoria BC won out over Pete Sky from Calgary and Valerie Franiel from Edmonton. An absolute rarity as spouses and Scotch partners, the pool playing of Larry and Andrea is pretty to watch (which is usually what you are doing if you are playing them).

The B Open was won by the team of Stewart Adams and Kristin Pryor of Nanaimo BC over the team of Ted Harms and Mary Rayner of Calgary AB.

The Canadian Cue Sport Association wishes to thank:
• the Acadia Rec Centre for a splendid job in hosting us once again,
• Hi Country Promotions of Fort Collins, Colorado for the 40 Valley Tables,
• all the Sponsors – Del from Lucasi Hybrid, Doug Otway from Rec World, Kara Leonard of TIPS Cue Services, Dave Melnyk of Q’s 4 Less and Marlene Lemay of Embroidery Classics for helping to make the Tournament a success.

The 9th Annual 2011 CCS Western Championships will be back in Calgary at the Acadia Rec Centre Apr 14 to 18th.
