PENTICTON SHINES

The "3rd Annual CCS 2008 British Columbia 8-Ball Championships" were held in Penticton February 6-10th, at the beautiful Lakeside Resort Hotel & Casino. Both inside and out you couldn’t ask for a better site for a Pool Tourney. In spite of being the year of the move from Langley, last year’s number of Team entries were matched and there were a record number in Singles. With the support of players and teams coming from all over BC and even Alberta, the CCS is extremely pleased to announce that the 4th Annual will be back in Penticton – same place, same time next year.

This was one very fun tournament to be at. With an ‘on time’ start and finish, with no issues in between, the focus was entirely on pool and competition as it should be. This was entirely due to the Tournament Staff who managed to make an incredibly difficult task look easy. The CCS thanks the tireless efforts of the local organizers - Gord and Sabrina Monteith, the first rate Tournament Direction provided by Chris Kelly from Calgary and the ACS certified Referee Crew headed by Darren Hutchinson from Victoria. A special thanks also to the local Penticton players for all their support and the very friendly reception given to all the visitors.

How was the competition? As first-timers and returnees battled it out in all the events, it was both intense and fun to watch thanks to Divisionalization and the very rigorous CCS Player Ranking System. Congratulations and ‘good luck’ to the new Champions, all of whom have won either CCS sponsored Paid Trips and/or Entries to compete in the upcoming CCS 2008 Western Championships April 30th to 4th in Calgary AB.

MENS SINGLES
There is no question that there are great pool players in the Okanagan. Last year, Nick Kruger won it all and this year it was Jack Ramsay who made the finals in a very tough field, before losing to the well known Edwin Montal of Calgary AB. Larry Wilson, 2002 National Champion from Victoria BC, finished third.
The B Open was won by Dan Leung Calgary AB over Jeremiah Kruger Penticton BC.
The C Standard was won by Bill Waldrum Edmonton AB over Rob Clarke Nanaimo BC.

WOMENS SINGLES
The A Advanced was a three-peat win by Maryann McConnell of Port Alberni BC who won out over perennial rival Andrea Wilson of Victoria BC. Kara Leonard from Calgary AB finished third. Sound familiar – same finish as last year.
The B Open was won by Toni Sakamoto Calgary AB over Evelyn Faryna Calgary AB.

MENS/MIXED TEAM
The A Advanced Finals featured the same 2 Teams from Calgary AB as last year but with new rosters– Goodfellas (Barry Hooey, Dave Martin, Chris Harms, Garey Kirkland, Edwin Montal) and Team Spain OLA! (Mike Burton, Jeremy Smith, Brad Whyte, Mark Vinogradov, Pete Sky). It seems like they take turns; last year it was Goodfellas who came out on top; this year it was Team Spain OLA! who won in the 25th game of the 2nd set. Third place was won by the 2007 Western Champs Over’8’ed, from Vancouver BC.
The B Open was won by the Forgotten One’s from Victoria BC over What’s Gonna Happen from Vancouver BC.
The C Standard was won by Cues Your Daddy from Penticton BC over the Pool Hall Junkies from Edmonton AB.

WOMENS TEAM
In the A Advanced Finals, the team of Even Odds (Mary Rayner, Toni Sakamoto, Kara Leonard, Tania Kozsan) from Calgary AB managed to upset the 2-time champion Killer B’s from Nanaimo BC (MaryAnn McConnell, Andrea Wilson, Janice Stromar, Tara Harrington). Finishing 3rd were the Panthers from Kamloops BC.
The B Open was won by Cougars & Cubs from Calgary AB over The Girls from Penticton BC.

SCOTCH DOUBLES
The A Advanced was won by the awesome, husband and wife team of Larry and Andrea Wilson of Victoria BC, both former National Singles Champions. Wayne Chow and Toni Sakamoto from Calgary AB finished 2nd and Mark Downey and Yvette Gallant also from Calgary finished 3rd.
The B Open was all Penticton as Chis and Laura MCneill finished on top, Keith Birtch and Char Wold finished 2nd and Mike Turley and Tina Windrum finished 3rd.

Special thanks to the Lakeside Resort Hotel & Casino for hosting us and making us feel welcome and all the Vendors and Sponsors who help make an Event like this possible – Falcon Cues, Q’s 4 Less, Tips Pro Shop, Shaw Cable, ANAF #97 (Flags), Cue’s Game Room, The Blue Mule And Martini’s.

The CCS would also like to thank all the Leagues and Players whose support helped make this 3rd Championship even better. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year and of course also at the 2008 Westerns in Calgary for those who can make it.
