2008 CCS Western 8 Ball Championship Results

Team Spain OLA! and Even Odds Repeat

Report by Ted Harms - Canadian Cue Sport Productions

The 6th Annual CCS Western Canadian 8 Ball Championships were held April 30th – May 4th at the Acadia Recreation Centre in Calgary AB.

Featuring a new table layout, the tourney ran super smooth and totally on time as usual thanks to the stellar Tourney Direction of Chris Kelly supported by a top notch Referee Crew headed by ACS Certified Head Ref Jeff Phythian. Those two guys make it look easy but trust me it’s not.

Also as usual, the turnout was great with broad representation from BC, AB and SK with even a team coming all the way from PEI!

Mens Team
In the A Advanced, it was Team Spain OLA! (Captain – Mike Burton, Jeremy Smith, Pete Sky, Mark Vinogradov, Brad Whyte, and Eugene Poucette) from Calgary AB, who followed up winning the 2008 BC Title in February with also winning the 2008 Westerns. With a core of long time friends, they are very tough to beat as many very solid teams have found out over the years. In the Finals, they won out over the Stickmen (Captain – Rob Clarke, Stewart Adams, Tim Patterson, Larry Wilson, and Craig Walters) from Victoria BC who are no pushovers. The B Open was won by Team Trouble of Edmonton AB over No Xcueses from Calgary AB and the C Standard was won by Sabu from St. Paul AB over the Bar-Barians from Regin from Regina SK.

Womens Team
In the A Advanced, the team of Even Odds (Captain Mary Rayner, Toni Sakamoto, Kara Leonard and Laureen Martin) of Calgary AB proved their first ever Title in the 2008 BC Championships in February was no fluke. In the Finals, they bested Shut Up and Shoot (Captain Shannon Hudson, Dani Edgar, Kathy Kerfoot, Crystal McKay and Launa) of Calgary AB to also take the 2008 Westerns Title.
The B Open was won by Smokin Mojos of Calgary AB over The Destroy-Its of Calgary AB.

Mens Singles
In the A Advanced, former Canadian Champ Dave Martin of Calgary AB took the Westerns Title for the first time by winning out over the always dangerous Russ Whittle also from Calgary AB. What a field it was which included the reigning National Champion Edwin Montal and three other former National Champions - Dave Martin, Larry Wilson and Steve Cherewyk. Special congrats must go to Mark Downey of Calgary AB who had to face all four, beat three of them and managed to finish 4th.
The B Open was won by Timothy Lezard of Penticton BC over Bryan Nilsson of Qualicum Beach BC and the C Standard was won by Joe Houle of Goodfish Lake AB over TJ Kreba of Calgary AB.

Womens Singles
In the A Advanced, it was all Calgary for the first time ever, as the up and coming and fearless Toni Sakamoto won out over the very experienced and talented Shantelle Farrell.
The B Open was won by Shawna Douglas of Edmonton AB over Melina McGowan of Cold Lake AB.

Junior Singles
Always a joy to host and watch, their enthusiam is incredible. The 18&Under was won by Daniel (Skinny) Hathaway of Edmonton over Andrew Avalak of Calgary AB. The 14&Under was won for the 2ndyear in a row by Justin Beavis of Calgary AB over Nathan Free from Calgary AB.
Special thanks to Falcon for their donation of cues to the Champs and to Grace Nakamura of Predator and Bob and Kara Leonard of Longoni for their donation of cues for a draw for each Division.

Scotch Doubles
In the A Advanced, the team of Marty Smith and Brenda Ouellette of Calgary AB won out over Russ Whittle from Calgary and Shawna Douglas from Edmonton AB to take the Falcon cues and the top cash.
The B Open was won by the team of Ted Harms and Mary Rayner of Calgary AB over the father/daughter team of Allen Jacobs and Maria Keating of Cold Lake AB.
