2009 CCS Western 8 Ball Championship Results

The Beat Rolls On

Report by Ted Harms - Canadian Cue Sport Productions

The 7th Annual CCS Western Canadian 8 Ball Championships were held April 29th – May 3rd at the Acadia Recreation Centre in Calgary AB.

Another good turnout and another super smooth tourney. It was FUN!

We congratulate all the winners and wish good luck to the A Champions who, with CCS paid trips, will represent the West at the 2010 Canadians in Toronto.

Here are the highlights:

Mens Team
In the A Advanced, it was a great match up of 2 Champion teams.

It was Team Spain OLA! (Captain – Mike Burton, Jeremy Smith, Pete Sky, Mark Vinogradov, Brad Whyte, and Eugene Poucette) from Calgary AB who had just won the 2009 CCS Nationals in Toronto at Easter versus the West Hills Coyotes (Captain – Nick Kruger, Warren Lee, Timothy Lezard, Jeremiah Kruger and Jack Ramsay) from Penticton BC, fresh off their win at the 2009 BC Championships.

And Team Spain OLA!, in a hard fought, two set Final, wins the title for the 3rd time in the last 4 years. They can be beat; just not very often.

The B Open was won by Shaft Strokers of Cold Lake AB over Thunder from Calgary AB and the C Standard was won by The Vikings from Calgary AB over the Big Hurt from Calgary AB.

Womens Team
In the A Advanced, there was another great match-up of teams from Penticton and Calgary, both looking for their first title.

It was Gimme A Break (Captain Karen Maier, Lois Hiltz, Bonnie Birch, Tina Windrem and Char Wold) of Penticton BC who were the top finshing Womens Team playing the men in the 2009 BC Championships.

In the other corner it was Like It Had Eyes (Captain Brenda Ouellette, Lisa Big Plume, Jolene BW Tooth and Wendy Onespot) of Calgary AB who ended up the winner in a real close one.

The B Open was won by Whiskey Jacks from Fort McMurray AB of Calgary AB over the Cuegars from Cold Lake AB.

Mens Singles
In the A Advanced, it was another very tough field filled with former Champions and great players.

In the end it was Russ Whittle from Calgary AB who, having just won the 2009 BC title, avenged his loss in the 2008 Western Finals by winning the 2009 title. He did it by winning out over the veteran Andy Mizan from Kamloops BC, a long time very straight and dangerous shooter.

The B Open was won by Leslie Thomas of Prince George BC over Wayne Chow of Calgary AB. and the C Standard was won by Ernie Day of Edmonton AB over Aaron Watchmaker of Kehewin AB.

Womens Singles
In the A Advanced, it was back to the longtime rivalry between two of Western Canada’s greatest all time players – Andrea Wilson from Victoria BC (3 time Western’s winner) and Maryann McConnell from Port Alberni BC (3 time BC’s winner).

This time it was Maryann, who claims her first Westerns title.

The B Open was won by Yvette Gallant of Calgary AB over Mary Rayner also from Calgary AB.

Junior Singles
It’s always great to watch the Juniors as they progress with their game. Both Jeremy Smith and Mike Aboudaher, members of the fabled Team Spain OLA!, were former Junior players here in Calgary.

The 18&Under Division was won for the 2nd year in a row by Daniel (Skinny) Hathaway of Edmonton over Eric Fawcett from Edmonton AB. Dan also made the 18&Under Finals at the Canadian Nationals in Toronto at Easter.

The 14&Under Division was won for the 3rd year in a row by Justin Beavis of Calgary AB in his last year of eligibility over Alex McCarty from Calgary AB.

I can hardly wait to see Dan and Justin match up at the 2010 Western Juniors. They both play real well.

Special thanks to Bob and Kara Leonard of Tips Pro Shop and Dave Melnyk of Q’s 4 Less for their donation of cues for each Junior Division.

Scotch Doubles
In the A Advanced, the team of Larry and Andrea Wilson from Victoria BC by winning out over Pete Sky from Calgary and Maryann McConnell from Port Alberni here at the 2009 Westerns made it a clean sweep of all 3 CCS Championships this year. They also took the BC’s in Penticton in February and the Canadians in Toronto at Easter. Well done!

The B Open was won by the team of James and Trina Blackman of Cold Lake AB over the father/daughter team of Allen Jacobs and Maria Keating of Cold Lake AB.
